|  14 Aug, 2009The Official Launch of Operation “Hlasela” In Batho- Bloemfontein Friday the 14th August saw the Free State Premier Mr. Ace Magashule, the Executive Mayor of Mangaung Local Municipality, Mr. Playfair Morule, Members of Executive Council (M.E.Cs) and Members of the Mangaung Mayoral Committee (MMCs) launch Operation-Hlasela in Batho, Bloemfontein. Operation Hlasela, is a provincial government initiative that focuses on creating jobs, improving economic standards, eradicating poverty, fighting crime as well as accelerating service delivery. In order for this initiative to achieve its objectives, the Free State Provincial government has allocated R33m to the renewal of the Batho area in Bloemfontein as one of the projects it will support under the broader initiative. The Batho Renewal project includes the building of new houses, paving and tarring of all roads, building & renovation of recreational and educational facilities in the area. Furthermore, the project also includes the erection of monuments & tourists attraction sites in the area to celebrate the history and maintain the legacy of the Batho area- one of the oldest residential areas in Bloemfontein. After a briefing session in the Floreat Hall, Bram Fischer Building on the elements of the project, the Premier & the Executive Mayor took the streets of Batho and visited some of the project sites in the area including amongst others the Mangaung Primary school (upgrade), a site where a co-operative is to be built on the Old Market premises, the Batho Clinic, an ngo in the area working with vulnerable groups in the community and some of the sites where old homes were demolished and new houses being built. This visibility in the area by the political leadership and senior government officials helped to raise awareness about the initiative and projects underway and also provided an opportunity for the leadership to receive valuable inputs from residents. |
