The MANGAUNG Fresh Produce Market aims to provide facilities, supporting services and systems that add value in the value chain of fresh produce.

The vision of MANGAUNG Fresh Produce Market is to be the hub of economic activity for the producers, market agents, intermediaries and consumers of fresh produce in South Africa by the year 2010.

The market started its operations in the late 1850’s in the then to be developed Bloemfontein CBD. In the mid 1900’s it was situated at the corner of Henry and East Burger Streets, commonly known as the Old Market. It was relocated in the 1990’s to its current site on the N8 east, off ramp into Rudolph Greyling Avenue (in a northerly direction).

Evident from the current statistics, a sharp increase in non bulk traders as market participants has occurred. An extensive marketing drive has also resulted in the return of some of the bulk buyers – one of the reasons being high transportation costs.

The bulk of the trading is with fresh produce rather than livestock and processed meats. Management continuously assesses the possibility of introducing the latter products in the future.

Market participants are divided into:

• Bulk buyers


• Housewives


• Informal traders (street vendors)


• Agents being the middlemen between the buyers and producers of fresh produce.


• Producers (farmers) who provide their produce for sale at the market via the market agents.


• The MANGAUNG Local Municipality, who provides the necessary infrastructure for all other participants to transact and exchange products for monetary value.
