News Update – Mangaung health and safety programme underway

The Mangaung Safety and Loss Control Division will soon resume with its unique training course for lower-level employees. The course is aimed at sensitising these employees about health and safety issues in the workplace.
The training course, a first of its kind in SA, is for employees with only a grade nine and lower education. It commenced in November 2012 with 21 employees from Bloemfontein and will branch out to other regions this year.
“The Safety and Loss Control Division has identified a shortcoming in the market to reach this category of employees with Health and Safety Training,” division manager Me Wilma Venter said about the importance of the course.
The course deals with various issues, including:
- What is Hazards/Risks
- Safety signs and the meaning there-off
- Unsafe acts and conditions and
- Ten commandments of safety.
The training is in partnership the National Safety Association (NOSA). The NOSA spokesperson in the Free State, Jo-Mari Du Plessis, said they were excited to be involved with the training, as this would benefit employees immensely.
“NOSA is proud to share sentiments that semi-skilled employees have the right to receive training in their own language in a medium that is easy to understand and to practically execute the knowledge they have obtained in their workplace,” Du Plessis said.
The Human Resource Development Sub-directorate has NOSA accredited facilitators who present the course in Sotho or English.
The training manuals use pictures and dvd’s to convey the message for easy recognition during and after training when in the workplace. The attendees all receive a NOSA certificate after completing this one (1) day course.
