Temporary Closure of Fort Subway & Temporary Stoppage of Potholes Filling

PUBLIC NOTICE: Heavy downpours continue to put pressure on the road infrastructure of the City. Motorists and all road users in the Metro’s jurisdiction are notified that the area around and adjacent the subway in Fort road will be temporarily closed due to vandalism of equipment used to suck water into drainage channels and from under the bridge, especially during localised floods. With flash floods, it will be difficult to suck stagnant / waterlock under the bridge. Users of this route are requested to make use of alternative roads.

Continued rains also interrupted filling off potholes and brought the project to a standstill. Work will continue as soon as weather conditions allow. The South African Weather Service has issued a level 2 warning for disruptive rain, with potential for localised flooding in areas with poor drainage systems, low-lying areas, roads and informal settlements. Loss of agricultural production may also be experienced.

Motorists are urged to be cautious on the following flooded roads or use alternative routes if possible:

  • Curie Avenue
  • James Dick
  • Wilcocks
  • Dr Belcher
  • OR Tambo
  • Fort Hare
  • Ferreira
  • Memoriam

All road users are requested to take extra caution:

  • Reduce speed
  • Switch on your headlights
  • Pedestrians should be careful when crossing the road
  • Avoid crossing rivers and streams where water is above your ankles

We also urge households to open/make pathways to allow water to flow out of their yards. Law Enforcement officials will be on the ground to direct traffic and ensure ease of movement.

In cases of emergency, residents should contact:
